Hello!
I am really starting to lean toward Charlie bone. there are 7 books so far in the series and i thoroughly enjoyed reading them all. I must say there were many late nights owed to that series-about 7:).

Our daring young protagonist lives with his mom, grandmother Masie, grandmother Bone, and seldom seen great-uncle Payton. His dad disappeared in... mysterious cirumstances when charlie was young.
Charlie soon finds that when he looks at photographs he can hear what the figures in them were thinking at the time. When his Grandma Bone finds out, Charlie is immediately sent to the nearby Bloors Academy, a school for the gifted and talented. Among a great many drama, art amd music guinesses there are 11 children that are endowed in... other ways.Some are his friends, and others his enemies as Charlie embarks on this journey to discover the past of one of his friends.... and maybe part of his own past.

I totally just rembereda great book!!! I just finished Sorcess, the latest Nicholas Flamel book by Scott and I it!!! What better book to start off the new school year than the fantastic adventure Alchemyst! I'll forward to you what I told the girls about it. I must get back to reading- if this doesn't work out Charlie Bone is also a great pick.

Final Year-end Wrap-up

First, congratulations to the team of Victoria, Lydia, Ali, Liz. They are the winners of Battle of the Books 2009!
It was a closely contested battle and I know most of the groups wanted the competition to keep going; one group especially wanted to extend time because they were mounting a huge comeback.

Thanks Molly for a terrific job of leading and promoting BOB the last two years! (We hope you can return for an appearance at the BOB mini-course to give your book recommendations to the group.)

Our new leadership next year will not consist of a president but of an oligarchy of the following: Maddie, Maggie, Megan, Em, and Sarah. They have taken charge of the following responsibilities to get ready for next year:

a. Help promote the summer teen program at Lindstrom Public Library
b. Meet at the public library's teen advisory council.
c. Advertise BOB to CLMS students in early fall.
d. Help advise Mr. S. what book to start with in Sept. for BOB.

Inkheart Discussion

Thanks Maddie, Em, and Maggie for leading the group through Inkheart. I think today's discussion proved that many in the group had a lot to say about the book. There were some questions brought up that did not get any follow-up. I think Maggie brought up a good point. Correct me if I'm wrong, but she brought up something about how some of us when we finish a book feel stronger or empowered. This makes me think about were some of the intended/unintended messages by the author of Inkheart.

Who is more powerful? The author or the reader? I think Inkheart made me think that a reader of the book is more powerful than the author. The reader makes the text come alive in their own imagination. Fenoglio was the author of Inkheart, but Mo and Meggie are the ones that made the books become "alive."

Okay so we have had our BOB poetry jam for the year! i have taken the time to put the poems and pictures of their authors so the whole world can see and read them, well not the whole world but still. Here is a quick little hint for all of you smarties out there. The adults who sit in on our BOB meetings have also written poems and I have posted them but they don't want their pictures so they have cleverly disguised themsleves as cartoon characters. So now we'll never know who they are. Oh well, (add sigh for dramatic effect)
The 6th graders wrote poems about Song of the Sparrow and the 7th, 8th, and adults wrote poems about Chains.

Being black is like being chained to a wall no matter how much I try to break them, the chains will never fall.

They have taken away everything, what is wrong with me, no matter how much I work for them, I will never be free.

Am I really what they say I am?
Trash, garbage, dirt?
Do they even recognize that I even hurt?

I remember a time of happiness. I remember a time I was free. I remember my mom, sister, and me. We were fine, just us three.

Are these chains breakable? Will they ever rot? Is there even a key in the world that will ever fill its slot?

ON JANUARY 14TH, WE WILL START INKHEART (the week after POETRY JAM).

The first week we will be playing the Inkheart memory game. Please read to page 58.

On the second week we will play bob-on-a-stick. Bob-on-a-stick is when we pull out a stick with a question on it and another stick with a name on it. If that name is yours you must answer the question. For the second week read to page 204.

The third week will be the debate week. Read to page 358.

The last and fourth week we will do "improv bob."

We have finished reading Chains and are ready to move on the Inkheart, something that I am not super excited about. It's like going from a fancy steak dinner to a McDonald's burger, but oh well. i will just have to put up with Inkheart.

All though we are done reading Chains we are not quite done. Next meeting, January 7, we will be having a poetry jam. I have already written mine due to a communications error. To find out more information about the poetry jam look below at a few past entries. Also Mr. Shoeneck wants me to relay that there maybe be prizes for those who participate.

2nd Annual Poetry Jam

This is for both BOB groups, 6-8th grade.

Last year the Bobbers wrote a poem for the book, Incantations. The group read their poems and then we created a display case to advertise the book. This year we will include both groups and advertise the books: Song of the Sparrow and Chains.

For Wed. the week we get back from break, we will have both groups meet together to present their poems.

Rules:

1. The poems can be free form and length will of course vary. If you have trouble thinking of an idea, try doing a 5 senses poem in which you describe the theme, emotion, conflicts, etc... of the story from each of your 5 senses. You don't have to do this type of poem. You choose what form.
2. For 6th grade your poem must be about the book Song of the Sparrow. For 7th and 8th grade your poem must be about the book Chains.
3. You don't have to read your poem outloud to the class, you may have someone else read it, but all poems will be presented as time allows. It would be better if you read your poem because you know how to interpret the poem, but again that is your choice.
4. During the poetry jam, no one will critique or evaluate your poem. Only the author can add comments to explain what inspired them to write the poem or offer comments on parts of the poem the author feels needs further explanation.
5. Your poems must be turned into Mr. S afterwards.

What did Isabel offer Curzon at Bridewell Prison that he refused to keep?

Possible debate questions:

Did Curzon make Isabel's life better or more miserable?

Did Isabel's burn scar symbolize strength or shame?

Isabel should have helped the British. The British promised freedom and the Patriot's desire for freedom didn't include those like Isabel.

Many of the characters experience visible and invisible chains to deal with in their lives. Invisible chains might include emotional abuse, laws & regulations, attitudes & beliefs. Which chain is worse, the visible or the invisible?

News:

Maddie, Emmelie, Maggie I think have volunteered to lead the group for January. We will be reading the book Inkheart, so Bobbers you need to check this book out before break.

Also, I must sadly report that Liz McGathey will be stepping down as BOB President. I would like to thank her for her years of service to Battle of the Books. All of us should also thank Liz because she was one of the original founders of Battle of the Books for our school. Without her involvement we probably would not have the thriving group we have today. Originally BOB started with 3 students. Although numbers are a little down now, we have had up to 37 students recorded as members of BOB. Liz also was an important contributor to the Friends of the Library committee at the local library. Liz, we hope you continue to stay as a member of BOB and thanks again!

(Molly will take over as President of BOB, but we will need someone to fill the Vice-President position. To be eligible you have to have time to participate at Friends of the Library on Thursday nights, be willing to help lead BOB meetings Wed. morning and help the President when needed. )

Its been a busy week here in BOB land. We have read our first three chapters in Chains and had some great discussion. I am really looking forward to continue reading this book and will even say it is the best book so far this year. For next week please read to the end of Part 1.

It has been quite a while since I have made a blog post and so much has happened! We have already finished Defect and are moving on to Chains by Laurie Halse Anderson for our December/January book. I am very excited to read this book because I have enjoyed other books by Anderson. Please stop by th elibrary to pick up a copy of the book and read the next three chapters before our next meeting.

Dear 6th grade battle of the books,

This is Amy and Lizzie. We are here to tell you about the next book we will be reading. It will be Song of the Sparrow. Please visit the school's library to get a copy. You have some time to read it, but copies are running out fast! We have some new members coming, which is great. After December, membership to B.O.B. will be closed.

Remember to be on the lookout for the mystery question. We will post it sometime between now and Dec. 2, 2008. You can turn in your answer with your name and answer on a small piece of paper on the morning of December 3 in order to be entered in the prize drawing. We think Mr. S will be giving out a gift certificate.

We were happy to have Angela Smith back to visit and share some of her favorite books with us. Both Carla and Angela had picks that made our final selection (Diamonds in the Shadow, Click, Defect, Chains).

So, here are our selections for 2008-2009:

Mini-course Day 2

Thanks to Hannah and Molly for leading the Mini-course!

Today we were privileged to have Carla Lydon share some book talks with us. We can read descriptions about all of our nominees but nothing can replace having someone share about books in person. Thanks, Carla.

We made some progress with T-Shirts and we were able to start trimming the list of books (although it might not appear to be any smaller). Tomorrow is a big day. We need to settle on a T-Shirt Design and vote on the books we would like for BOB this year.

Because of limited funds this is how we will look at our task: BOB gets to select 6 books for the year, and 2 alternates. We will have two alternates in case our treasurer is unable to balance the funds and we need to have a selection that will cost less. So, our alternate selections need to be less expensive compared to the other books nominated.

Sixth grade needs to know this: you will read some, not all, of the 7th and 8th grade BOB books. A couple of books from last year may be put on your list. This was the case last year. You may give input which you would like put on your list for this year.

We also need to know by the end of the course tomorrow which of you will be joining BOB for the rest of the year.

Angela Smith will visit with the group tomorrow, so we are packing in a lot. See you then.

Molly and Hannah are doing a tremendous job leading the mini-course!

All of us need to put our heads together and help solve a couple of time-consuming problems: we have to trim our nomination list at the same time as adding more nominations from our guest speakers, and we have to decide on a T-Shirt design. This is not as easy as it sounds. So, be ready tomorrow.

I recommend that you come up with a list of your 10 favorite nominees and start getting prepared to promote/defend them as BOB books for 2008-2009. (Some of you have already figured out some of the various reasons we call it "battle" of the books.)

Prizes? Contests? Scavenger Hunts?

As a way to get BOB members to use our blog more, I was thinking of having a scavenger hunt this winter using clues from our BOB books and posting them on our blog. For prizes I was thinking of offering some gift certificates for Barnes and Noble or the iTunes Store.

Mini courses are right around the corner and so are nominations for BOB! If you aren't taking the planning mini course try and get your book suggestions to some one (or post a comment) so you can still have a say. Mr. Shoeneck and I have compiled a list of books we think would be enjoyed by all ages and genders in BOB (see below) During the mini course we will also work on T-shirt designs, have guest speakers, and snacks! Oh and don't forget about the Halloween party set up at the Chisago Lakes Public Library(CLPL).For more information see post below.If you can come we would really appreciate it. Friends Of The Library

Hey there its me again! So on the first Thursday of every month the officers(me, Liz, and Hannah) all go to the Friends of the Library meeting at the Chisago Lakes Public Library(known as CLPL from now on) and plan events that both BOB and the CLPL work together to create. This month we will be providing man power for the Halloween Party(story time, pumkin decorating, treats, costumes optional). The party will take place on October 30 at 6:30. We are asking that all our volunteers get there between 5:30 and 6 but the time isn't completly set yet. If you have any ideas about how else we can help the CLPL talk to Liz or Molly at school or post a comment.

Ready, Set, Read!

Hey there everyone out there in the world wide web who has stopped by to check out the blog! BOB is back and ready to tackle a brand new school year.We can't wait to start reading and discussing our way through a whole new school year. FYI: mini courses are just three short weeks away and soon we will be adding 6th graders into our ranks.

In case you don't already know BOB stands for Battle Of the Books(yes we know that it should be BOTB but BOB sounds way cooler)and it is a student-lead read-and- discuss group that meets once a week before school. Its tons of fun! We read,laugh, eat snacks; we're like one closly knit community. The best part is that at the end of the school year we all get together and have a competition to see who knows the books the best.

Right now in BOB we are reading Song of the Sparrow. It's about this girl named Elaine who lives at the war camp of Arther and Lancelot (King Arther and the Round Table) if you're not reading it already you should check it out.

Well gotta go, that's all I've got for now, stay tuned for news from me and the rest of the gang from BOB. Oh, and remember to find out about the Lady of Shalott.
